Considering the Meaning of Juneteenth

If I were to ask you when slavery ended in America, those of you who paid attention in history class might say something like January 1, 1863, which is when President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

And while that’s a good answer, it’s also a wrong one.

The Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves that were held by states that had joined the Confederacy. In other words, the proclamation only applied to parts of the country that the federal government had no control over at that time and not one chain was broken that fateful new years day.

In fact, it would take two and a half years of fighting and countless deaths before those words would have their full effect and bring freedom to the millions of African Americans being held in bondage. …Read more

Marvel’s Victoria Alonso Calls Out Disney Response to “Don’t Say Gay” Bill: “Take a Stand”

At Saturday’s GLAAD Media Awards, the Marvel Studios exec detailed a 45-minute conversation with Disney CEO Bob Chapek over his response to the Florida bill and asked for greater action.

In a night of defiance in the face of oppression, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Kacey Musgraves and Andrew Garfield were joined by hundreds of guests in an overflowing ballroom at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday night to celebrate the 33rd annual GLAAD Media Awards.

While the purpose of the evening was to recognize and honor those who had achieved success in film, television, music and other artistic mediums, the current anti-LGBTQ political climate in several states was never far from anyone’s mind. Why Diversity Matters at Advertise Purple

We need to do more.

That’s the simple truth we learned when we took the time to examine our own efforts to improve diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) both within our company and our community.

Diversity and equality are important values for our company, and while we have taken some positive steps forward, such as making Juneteenth, a celebration of the end of slavery, a paid company holiday, we still need to do more to make sure that our actions are consistent with our values.

“Active inclusion has been in our company DNA since day one,” says Advertise Purple President Kyle Mitnick. “However, today, it’s not just about just ensuring a diverse workforce, managerial diversification, equitable pay, proper company messaging, and philanthropic events for the underserved community. We need to do more. We need to take steps outside our comfort zone, initiate dialogue with community leaders, and join hands with our neighbors to construct a bulletproof DEI strategy.” …Read more
